CONNECT WITH DANIELLE
I’m a wife and momma on the daily and bouquets of flowers from Trader Joes are my love language. I’m passionate about joyful marriages, encouraging words and chasing your dreams. The only thing I love more than photographing weddings is education and encouraging creative entrepreneurs! I nerd out about marketing, personality types, and making digital images look like film! I run off joy, grace and a lot of coffee! If you only remember one thing from me, I want it to be this: you are so loved! Learn More

How I started…. Contentment was always something I struggled with. The thought of “having it all” and “dressing cute” was strong when I was in college and that followed me as I aged and moved and had roommates! Clothes on clothes on clothes. In a world where “things” tend to clutter our homes, our spaces and our lives I fed into the lies of needing to shove my home, closets and drawers full of stuff. Not because I needed it, but just because. I’ve always been anxious with clutter, I organize for fun. No, seriously. I’m that friend who comes over to help you clean, because I like it. I’ll organize your pantry if I’m bored and I’ll probably organize your medicine cabinet when I go pee. Anyway, I tend to feel that I have minimalistic heart but coveting tendencies. And then, I just stopped. I stopped cramming crap into my home and my life. My husband and I moved in with my in-laws in an effort to save money and get out of debt. As we downsized the freedom that came with purging though possessions was contagious and inspiring. I just kept reminding myself that at the end of my life I can’t take it all to Heaven so what is the point?! I started following Un-Fancy and her capsule wardrobe inspired me! She encourages you and gives you realitic ways to make it happen! A while ago and I thought, I could do this, and make it really work for me. I decided to curate my own Capsule Wardrobe!
That was it. As I purged through all the items I was left with the “keep” pile. I knew I wanted to get down to under 40 items for that season which happened to be Fall. So I boxed up Summer, Spring & Winter and put those airtight containers in my garage. When I was going through my Fall clothing I purged it down even more. I was left with about 30 pieces. I knew I had a few pieces to replace so i made a list of those capsule items I wanted to replace. It took about 3 weeks to tweak my Fall capsule and replace the items. I used some of the money I made from the clothing I sold to purchase the new pieces.
When I think about what is needed from my clothing, I think about what I do daily. I am a photographer which can be casual on the daily, but on a wedding day the clothing needs to be comfortable and neutral colored while also keeping with the vibe of the event. I’m also a mom on the daily, which let’s be honest, is messy! I think about how I don’t want to worry about getting messy. (Think spaghetti sauce, finger pants and dirt…lots of dirt.) I never want my clothes to hinder me from living my life. I’m just not that kind of lady. Don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean I sacrifice style or cute clothes, I’m just conscious of this when I’m selecting my clothing. For me I’m I’ll about comfort and style, I’m a big lover of jeans and a tee.
So what have I learned from this? I spend less on clothing, less time driving around trying on clothes in frustration and less time standing in front of my closet in the morning thinking “i have nothing to wear” as I stare at a closet full of clothing. And honestly, I’ve gained more freedom from wanting it “all”. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy clothing and style but I feel there is more intention behind it now. I know my go to outfits and when I do want to find something new, I go into a store with a game plan and don’t impulse shop only to have that item sit in my closet unworn. I’m sure there are other ways too!
So, let’s talk about how you can do this! I promise you, you totally can. I wish I could come over and go through your closet with you because that is my happy place and I know how overwhelming it can be staring at your closet! My capsule is 35 pieces! Thats it, and I’m content with that. You can choose any number you feel comfortable with!
So where to start?
Pull everything out. I mean it, everything. Start making piles of clothing and be ruthless, this isn’t the time to be a softy! Start with clothing, then move to shoes, and finally accessories.
Pile 1 – I love these items, they fit me and I wear the frequently. Keepers
Pile 2 – I want to keep this, but I don’t know why.
Pile 3 – These items don’t fit me or my style: Donate or sell
Pile 4 – These items aren’t in good condition: Throw away.
Pile 1 – Goes back in your closet. but be sure to pare this down to your goal number. If you have a hard time coming up with a number go with 37! If the item is off season put them in a box to be stored for the upcoming seasons and not take up space in your current capsule!
Pile 2 – Gets boxed up and stored away from sight for 30 days.
Pile 3 – Get’s boxed ip and put in your car right away to be donated or sold. Don’e delay putting this box in your car so you don’t have time to rethink it.
Pile 4 – Goes to the trash.
If you don’t end up missing pile 2 after the 30 days, do NOT open it and donate it! Set this day on your calendar so you don’t forget!
Wear your 37 items for a season, or about 3 months! Don’t go shopping during the season! Seriously, don’t do it. Until! You start to plan your next season capsule by pulling out the box you had stored away and see if there are any pieces you need to add or replace. Don’t shop until the last month of the current season. The amount you spend is up to you, but keep in mind less is more and think about what you do daily!
